The ‘black box’ of plant demography: how do seed type, climate and seed fungal communities affect grass seed germination?

چکیده

Summary Demographic studies measure drivers of plant fecundity including seed production and survival, but few address both abiotic biotic germination such as variation in climate among sites, population density, maternal plants, type fungal pathogen abundance. We examined microbial communities seeds Danthonia californica , which are either chasmogamous (external, wind‐pollinated) or cleistogamous (internal, self‐fertilized) Festuca roemeri solely chasmogamous. Seed populations were sourced across environmental gradients. tested used high‐throughput sequencing to characterize community structure. For F . plants significantly influenced did pathogens; increased from wetter, cooler sites. D the main plant, on average, more germinated. Fungal depended largely type, with fewer fungi associated seeds, also site factors vapor pressure deficit, density whether had Putative pathogens that negatively correlated abundant for than seeds. In contain vastly different communities.

Retraction notice for: Carbon nanotubes are able to penetrate plant seed coat and dramatically affect seed germination and plant growth.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were found to penetrate tomato seeds and affect their germination and growth rates. The germination was found to be dramatically higher for seeds that germinated on medium containing CNTs (10-40 mug/mL) compared to control. Analytical methods indicated that the CNTs are able to penetrate the thick seed coat and support water uptake inside seeds, a process which can affec...

Seed germination and vigor.

Germination vigor is driven by the ability of the plant embryo, embedded within the seed, to resume its metabolic activity in a coordinated and sequential manner. Studies using "-omics" approaches support the finding that a main contributor of seed germination success is the quality of the messenger RNAs stored during embryo maturation on the mother plant. In addition, proteostasis and DNA inte...

Seed dormancy and germination.

Seed dormancy and germination are complex adaptive traits of higher plants that are influenced by a large number of genes and environmental factors. Studies of genetics and physiology have shown the important roles of the plant hormones abscisic acid and gibberellin in the regulation of dormancy and germination. More recently, the use of quantitative genetics and mutant approaches has allowed t...

Seed Germination and Dormancy.

Seeds are a vital component of the world’s diet. Cereal grains alone, which comprise -90% of all cultivated seeds, contribute up to half of the global per capita energy intake. Not surprisingly then, seed biology is one of the most extensively researched areas in plant physiology. Even in relation to the topics reviewed here, a casual perusal of the Agricola database reveals that well over 5000...
